More than 80 friends and supporters gathered for a stimulating evening with Br Gerard Ellul (Leader, East Africa District) on March 15. Gerard outlined recent developments, ongoing challenges and hopes for the future at Br Beausang School, Ruben Centre and Mary Rice Centre in Kenya, Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School in Tanzania and STAR Support Group in South Sudan. Gerard spoke also of a more recently established outreach for people living with HIV/AIDS at Eldoret, some 300km north west of Nairobi. Gerard highlighted the Region’s commitment to engagement with the local people through working collaboratively within a community development framework. He underscored the challenge for all projects in working towards achieving self-sustainability while at the same time remaining accessible for the poor.
Presentations were made from the Foundation to Br Barry Callan, acknowledging his 8 years as Director, Ruben Centre and to Mr Noel O’Brien, acknowledging his many years of support for development for the peoples of Africa as founder of The 500 Supporters Group, Foundation Board Member and generous donor. Among the guests were representatives of The 500 Supporters’ Group, Zimele Foundation, Project Kenya and Victorian Edmund Rice schools – CBC St Kilda, Parade, St Bernard’s Essendon, St Joseph’s Geelong, St Kevin’s Toorak and St Patrick’s Ballarat.
