Gone Trekking – Stories

STORIES FROM PEOPLE YOU SUPPORT

Joe Avi, PNG

ERFA Funded Project: Saiho Community Based Rehabilitation Learning Centre, Papua New Guinea

“”Adult Literacy is a doorway to other opportunities for those who have not been able to complete their education”

Joe was in primary school in Rabaul, ENB province when a volcano erupted that affected his entire province and disrupted his education. His family left Rabaul and returned home to their village in the Oro Province. Joe had lived in the village all his life and wanted to see change in the community and an improved lifestyle for himself and his family.

With a strong desire to gain knowledge and improve his standard of living, Joe enrolled in the Adult Literacy Program at the ERFA funded program Saiho Community Based Rehabilitation Learning Centre in Papua New Guinea.

Since being involved in the Centre, his English and maths has improved, which has allowed him to be more supportive of his children’s education. He has also become a role model and strong advocate against Family Violence and Drug and Alcohol Abuse in his community and educating young people to work towards improving their standard of living and not be involved in illicit activities.

We at ERFA are very excited when we hear stories like Joe’s in Papua New Guinea, where real change is happening within communities that work towards sustainable development through education.
