The Language for Living in Australia program at Edmund Rice Centre WA (ERCWA) aims to enhance the experience of refugees and migrants transitioning into their new culture and community by providing opportunities to develop English language proficiency. For Abouk, who arrived as a refugee in 1975, the program has propelled her upon a career path she never envisioned.
For ten years, Abouk has developed her reading, writing and speaking skills which helped her to not only successfully complete her TAFE studies, but shine within her cohort. The program’s unique style of teaching and specific catering to the needs of individuals was praised by Abouk’s TAFE Teacher for its encouragement of individuals to pursue further study. Now an established employee within the aged care sector, Abouk has decided to return to ERCWA to continue her English competency and encourage others to embark upon lifelong learning opportunities as she has done.
