On 16 May 2026, a devastating fire tore through an informal settlement located along Port Sidewalk, Barangay Tejero, Cebu City. This resulted in the displacement of 247 families (approximately 945 individuals), many of whom participate in education-based projects delivered in partnership by Edmund Rice Ministries and Edmund Rice Foundation.
Immediately following the incident, Edmund Rice Ministries mobilised its staff and volunteers to conduct a rapid needs assessment and provide initial emergency assistance through its Critical Intervention Program. As the situation evolved, additional support was sought from Edmund Rice Foundation and others to address the continuing needs of affected families beyond the initial emergency phase.
The Hope Beyond Crisis Project was developed to provide food assistance, school supplies, hygiene materials, sleeping gear, and other essential household items to support families during the early stages of recovery.
The project aimed to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to fire-affected families while supporting their transition from emergency response to early recovery.

As they rebuild their homes, families living in Cebu City’s informal settlements want to work and provide for their families. But they lack education and recognised skills. This keeps many trapped in poverty.
The Sustainable Livelihoods through Education Empowerment Project (S.L.E.E.P.), led by Edmund Rice Ministries Foundation, Philippines Inc., gives adults living in poverty the chance to learn practical, job-ready skills and build a secure future.
