A brighter future for Kibera’s youth

The situation

In Kibera, youth face high unemployment, mental health challenges, and limited opportunities to participate in the community.

Economic pressures fuel ongoing cycles of poverty, crime, and drug abuse, leaving youth disengaged and without pathways to stable futures.

Our Response

Kibera Youth Innovation Hub is a youth‑led initiative of Edmund Rice Foundation. Young people build skills in entrepreneurship, digital literacy, mental wellbeing, and civic engagement. At the centre is the Youth Collective, a group of young leaders who co‑design programs, lead activities, and ensure the Hub reflects youth perspectives, priorities, and aspirations.

Over a three-year project cycle, youth are supported to become economically empowered, mentally resilient, and actively involved in shaping the future of their community. As these young people gain skills, confidence, and leadership experience, Kibera becomes safer, better governed, and a thriving environment for new ideas and business opportunities.
