Guiding Change

In the informal settlement of Langas, Eldoret, young people face crime, marginalisation, exclusion, human rights violations and abuse. As the head of the Guidance and Counselling at nearby Wareng High School, Lany* was overwhelmed by issues of substance abuse, absenteeism, teen pregnancy and ill-discipline.

Through a partnership with Edmund Rice Eldoret Empowerment Program, that’s changing. Students gain access to life skills and human rights training, helping them to reimagine their futures and grow both academically and personally. Lany also learned new ways to connect and counsel students, building better connections.

My engagement with EREEP has made me a better teacher, leader and improved my counselling skills. I now understand my students more deeply and support them more effectively.

Creating brighter futures

Seeking to break the cycle, the community of Kensekka requested access to quality vocational education and skills development for its youth. St Joseph’s Kensekka Vocational Secondary School emerged as the solution.

From the outset, the project faced immense challenges as the school lacked basic infrastructure. Connecting power, water pumps and installing security bars were significant milestones for creating a safe and conducive learning environment.

With these foundational steps complete, electric sewing machines, computers, and a science laboratory can be introduced to provide new learning opportunities.

Education for Economic Empowerment

Amalia* struggled to find a sustainable source of income and relied on her son to cover basic necessities. Despite hardships, she dreamed of owning her own small retail store.

Through the support of Edmund Rice Ministries Foundation Philippines Inc. (ERMFPI), in partnership with the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), Amalia has found a lifeline in the Cebu Families Education for Enhanced Livelihoods (FEEL) project. She learned business, financial and entrepreneurial skills and gained access to seed funding.

Amalia now has financial stability and can afford not only daily necessities to provide for her family but savings for emergencies and healthcare. Her enterprise thrives by prioritising essential goods like food and hygiene products, attracting consistent customers and generating significant profits. This success allowed Amalia to expand her stall, bringing her empowerment and self-reliance.
