As schools across Kenya reopened on the 4th January 2021 after over 9 months closed, we also saw the opening of CLC House, the onsite hostel for vulnerable secondary girls constructed at ERCEC. This was made possible with the support of the Catholic Ladies College Eltham in Victoria and Edmund Rice Foundation Australia.

CLC House is part of a Girls Empowerment program involving the Edmund Rice Vocation Centre for community education which is based at the school.

The eight girls in the hostel are from difficult backgrounds including two who are orphans, one whose family are refugees from the DRC and one from a rural area who is both a young wife and mother.

Grace, the matron will play an important role in the life of the girls as both “house parent” and mentor. Her background includes experience in counselling which is important in this crucial role. Grace is also a graduate of the school (2008)”.

On this International Women’s Day, Lucy’s* story is a testament to the power of opportunity, education, and perseverance.
