A day in the life of an Education Training Officer

Kakamega County, Kenya

School Development Programme | Pursue

Grace works as an Education Training Officer across Kakamega County. No two days are ever the same but, each day is guided by our shared purpose: connecting schools and communities to quality education.

Grace’s day begins early, travelling into the community to engage with informal schools led by the local community. As informal schools, most do not receive support from the Government. Grace connects with school heads, teachers, parents and local leaders to learn about the educational needs of their schools.

Through community conversations and school visits, Grace shows how the Pursue Education Programme supports a strong reading culture, improves learning outcomes, and creates safe, engaging spaces for children.

This community engagement process is incredibly important for building trust and meaningful partnerships that will support children’s learning and their whole lives.

I genuinely enjoy this work. Meeting and interacting with new school leaders is thrilling and fulfilling.

Grace

Looking ahead

In Kakamega County, many community schools operate with few resources and little access to trained teachers or government support. Children are eager to learn, but without foundational literacy skills, their future opportunities narrow dramatically.

One in three young children can’t read a single word. Without urgent support, many students will continue falling behind.

Through teacher training, literacy support, child safeguarding, positive discipline and parent engagement, we can create safer learning environments where children thrive.

1 in 3 children in Western Kenya cannot read a single word.

As we head towards the end of the financial year, your gift can help children learn, read and thrive.

In rural western Kenya, classrooms are overcrowded, teachers are untrained and under-supported, and children are leaving school unable to read, leaving them disadvantaged for life.

But, with your help, this can change.

With improved teacher training, better literacy support and safer classrooms, children can gain the foundational skills they need to succeed at school and beyond.

Your support this tax time will help train teachers, strengthen schools and help thousands of children learn to read with confidence.
