About

In Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s most marginalised communities, children living with disabilities face enormous barriers to education. Stigma, unsafe spaces, and lack of specialist support keep many from learning and thriving.

The Kurt Fearnley Special Needs Unit at Ruben Centre, is changing this by creating inclusive education and care so children with disabilities can learn and participate with dignity.

The Unit provides:

  • > Inclusive education that builds communication, literacy, life skills, and independence
  • > Therapy and psychosocial support for children and caregivers
  • > Teacher training to meet diverse learning needs
  • > Inclusive sports and arts to nurture talent, confidence, and social connection
  • > Family support to enhancing understanding and well being
  • > Community awareness to challenge stigma and promote disability equity and rights

Your support helps children living with disabilities in Mukuru thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

1 in 3 children in Western Kenya cannot read a single word.

As we head towards the end of the financial year, your gift can help children learn, read and thrive.

In rural western Kenya, classrooms are overcrowded, teachers are untrained and under-supported, and children are leaving school unable to read, leaving them disadvantaged for life.

But, with your help, this can change.

With improved teacher training, better literacy support and safer classrooms, children can gain the foundational skills they need to succeed at school and beyond.

Your support this tax time will help train teachers, strengthen schools and help thousands of children learn to read with confidence.
