When Karanja arrived, I joked that he knew more people in Australia than I did. By the end of his packed, occasionally frenetic engagement tour covering capital and regional cities in all six states – I think it may be true.
Karanja shared his story with many. It is a story of strength, determination, and the transformative power of education. It is also a story of faith and family – a family that has included the global Edmund Rice network over many years.
His story captures lived experience of poverty, hardship, systemic inequity and disempowerment. Ultimately however, his story is about promoting a community with heart, that is willing to be brave and foster practical opportunities for those facing severe adversity, so they can aspire and achieve. This makes it a very Edmund Rice story.
It was a privilege to listen to Karanja talk to our Australian Edmund Rice community about the unwavering love and support of his mother in the face of relentless and grinding poverty.
Karanja’s honest reflection was also about impact and legacy. Specific mention was made of Australian Brother, Peter Cole’s work in Nairobi – planting the seed – providing mentorship, kindness and practical support for those living in severe poverty in the vast urban slums of Nairobi.
When we were in Melbourne Karanja was very keen to pay his respects, laying flowers at the Brother’s Cemetary at Parade College, where Brother Peter was laid to rest. We are grateful to staff at Parade College who made this simple and meaningful gesture of respect possible for Karanja – a beautiful moment of grace and connection.
Edmund Rice Foundation is very fortunate to have amazing team members like Karanja, and we are very proud to share the impact of their journey. We are also very proud of the ongoing impact of our work and love to share this impact with our supporters. Thank you to the schools, organisations, businesses and individuals that were part of this recent journey. Thank you for the support that makes all this possible. May you continue to be part of the Edmund Rice Foundation journey so that we can continue this story and continue to provide life-changing opportunities, liberating lives through education.
